Leading manufacturer of biscuits, savory snacks and crisps including McVitie's, Penguin, go ahead!, Jacob's, Twiglets, Hula Hoops, Mini Cheddars, McCoy's, and KP.

In 2011, United Biscuits achieve its goal of sending zero waste to landfill across all UB sites, four years ahead of the original deadline. This initiative required a complete culture change and UB involved both their employees and suppliers in the process to generate ideas on how to reduce waste.

A detailed analysis of UB’s generated waste highlighted that a third of waste could have been recycled, a third was due to excessive packaging and a third should genuinely be sent to landfill. Recycling facilities were expanded to cope with the first third; workshops with suppliers were held to come up with solutions to reduce packaging waste, a by-product of which was a reduction in operating costs. Any material UB were absolutely sure could not be avoided or recycled was incinerated to generate energy.

This fresh approach to waste minimisation has spread to other parts of the business, and UB have found solutions in reducing consumer packaging, which has resulted in less pallets being used and the equivalent of 500 less lorry journeys, benefiting both the environment and the business.

"Our original goal was to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2015 but we actually achieved this by the start of 2012. Meeting this goal required every single person in the business to change the way they worked to help us to massively reduce the total waste and to increase the amount of waste that was recycled."

Bob Brightwell, Head of Corporate Communication, United Biscuits

Procter & Gamble

We started with a strong focus on identifying savings and increased recycling revenues which helped drive our corporate recycling rate up and enabled a few sites to achieve zero waste to landfill.  But, we were still left with a may materials that could not be recycled using conventional techniques. We needed a new creative solution for these materials. Today our Alternative Use Program finds new ways to repurpose by-products from our manufacturing processes. We identified partners that can render our materials and blend them into new non competing products. Significant effort is spent ensuring the safety and regulatory compliance of these new products but the environmental and economic benefits to both parties are obvious. P&G diverts material away from disposal (environmental and economic saving/revenue) and our partner has a new source of low cost raw material. This has enabled us to make significant progress against our Corporate Waste Target, helped more sites reach zero waste to landfill and created new revenue streams in place of disposal costs.
