Founded in 1973, Bookpoint has been supplying businesses for more than 35 years delivering an efficient, high quality serviceto the book industry. Bookpoint distributes on behalf of publishing divisions of the Hachette UK Group as well as a number of third party client publishers.

Bookpoint Ltd has their own Environment Team made up of representatives from all parts of the company, working with Saica Natur to ensure the legal requirements are met. The company decided to use the analogy of a ‘Bull Elephant’ to help staff visualise the 101 tonnes of waste being sent to landfill in 2010 – 13.5 elephants! The company used a number of initiatives to reduce waste, including colour-coded waste streaming; employing a member of staff to collect and bale cardboard and plastic nightly; a closed loop transport system helped reduce the packaging waste generated via customer deliveries; investing in an on-site shredding machine to shred returned books unfit for use. This resulted in a 98.9% recycling rate in 2011.

"Winning the Silver Award was well received by everyone at Bookpoint as we have been on a long journey to achieve the results and recognition. The Silver Award helped focus the work our Environmental team promote and they were voted as Winners in the employee Team award for Bookpoint in November (this is not voted for by Management, but by fellow workers). Going for Gold!!!" Martyn Burchall, Bookpoint

For clothing that is not suitable for re-wear markets, a computer controlled recycling unit operates 24/7 to produce multiple compound materials for the manufacturing industry. They are currently achieving 62% re-use (52% of which is re-wear as clothes and 10% re-use as wipers) and a 32% recycling rate (compromising insulation products and raw materials for reprocessing through closed loop manufacturing).

MITIE's waste business combines the strength of MITIE in the marketplace with an expert knowledge of the waste industry to take our clients on the zero waste journey.

In 2011, Santander and MITIE agreed a plan to look at waste management in a more holistic way to achieve 100% landfill diversion in all 19 head office locations by 2013, focusing on the three R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). An audit highlighted that 21% of waste was going to landfill at the end of 2010 and that there were discrepancies between offices in the recycling rates (less than 60% to more than 90%). A plan was implemented to raise staff awareness of the issues and 3Rs, reduce packaging waste, implement alternatives to landfilling. The results meant that waste output decreased 34% between 2011-2012, a total reduction of 466 tonnes year-on-year; The recycling rate increased from 79% in 2010 to 95% in the first six months of 2012; The amount of general waste to landfill reduced from 21% in 2010 to 3% in the first six months of 2012 – predominantly due to the high recycling rate, but also because half the general waste is now converted into energy.

"There’s no better saying in waste than ‘Less is more’. By becoming a Silver Zero Waste Award winner, we are demonstrating that Santander & MITIE have understood what this means.” Mike Taylor, MD for MITIE’s waste business
