ERC Ltd. works alongside local authorities, waste companies and retailers to collect and recycle unwanted clothing, and give them new life. We are committed to closed loop recycling and the waste hierarchy

Every day ERC processes 1,000 tonnes of textiles, clothing, shoes and accessories into over 400 grades, sorting until no re-wearable product remains. For clothing that is not suitable for re-wear markets, a computer controlled recycling unit operates 24/7 to produce multiple compound materials for the manufacturing industry. They are currently achieving 62% re-use (52% of which is re-wear as clothes and 10% re-use as wipers) and a 32% recycling rate (compromising insulation products and raw materials for reprocessing through closed loop manufacturing).

"The European Recycling Company Ltd is proud to be recognised as inaugural winners of a silver zero waste award. We have worked for many years to provide the public with means to reduce the amount of waste that they create, and continue to innovate to work towards our goal of complete closed loop recycling."

ENeco is Wessex Waters waste, recycling and renewable energy company. It turns organic waste and sewage into renewable energy and fertiliser and prioritises a sustainable, zero-waste solution for food waste.

GENeco was set up in 2009 to deliver Wessex Waters vision of zero waste to landfill and carbon neutrality by 2020.The CompAer process used to treat the waste water and sewage is unique and combines a number of techniques to ensure 100% of the material is diverted from landfill, including 10,000t grit and screenings from which 3,500t of compost and 1,500t of fuel for the waste to energy plant is created. This has saved Wessex Water £700,000 against landfill costs and reduced its carbon footprint by 1,200t C02 per annum. Importantly these benefits are replicable nationally and should result in 145,000t material being diverted from landfill, with a saving (after processing costs) of £10,150,000 if applied countrywide.

Leading by example so that we can inspire others to think about how they use items and more importantly how they dispose of them is essential. We achieved exactly what we set out to do and are really proud to now be recognised for all that hard work."

Midlands Co-operative Society is one of the largest independent retail societies in the UK. It is a modern forward looking organisation which employs over 7,000 staff. Midlands Co-operative has more than 300 trading outlets across 11 counties.

In April 2010 Midlands Co-operative Society launched its Zero Waste to Landfill project aiming to not send any food or packaging waste from its food stores by June 2011 and its distribution centres by November 2011. Food waste is sent for Anaerobic Digestion, generating renewable energy, reducing green house gas emissions and producing a valuable bio fertilizer. The results show that from May 2010 to July 2011 740 tonnes of food waste (14% increase) and 99 tonnes of general waste (19% increase) were diverted from landfill.

"To have won silver in the Zero Waste Awards 2012 is a fantastic achievement and something that our retail stores and the Society is very proud of. We have a great base to now develop a number of initiatives to prevent waste in the first instance."

Michael Spencer, Head of Retail Trading for Midlands Co-operative Society

MITIE's waste business combines the strength of MITIE in the marketplace with an expert knowledge of the waste industry to take our clients on the zero waste journey.

In 2011, Santander and MITIE agreed a plan to look at waste management in a more holistic way to achieve 100% landfill diversion in all 19 head office locations by 2013, focusing on the three R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). An audit highlighted that 21% of waste was going to landfill at the end of 2010 and that there were discrepancies between offices in the recycling rates (less than 60% to more than 90%). A plan was implemented to raise staff awareness of the issues and 3Rs, reduce packaging waste, implement alternatives to landfilling. The results meant that waste output decreased 34% between 2011-2012, a total reduction of 466 tonnes year-on-year; The recycling rate increased from 79% in 2010 to 95% in the first six months of 2012; The amount of general waste to landfill reduced from 21% in 2010 to 3% in the first six months of 2012 – predominantly due to the high recycling rate, but also because half the general waste is now converted into energy.

"There’s no better saying in waste than ‘Less is more’. By becoming a Silver Zero Waste Award winner, we are demonstrating that Santander & MITIE have understood what this means.”

Mike Taylor, MD for MITIE’s waste business
